'LANDling' Module | Final Extensive Course from the 2nd semester (immersive course-retreat)
Retrospective 2023: Alight & Flight: Support, Enchantment and Restoration | Modus Operandi AND & companion practices
with Fernanda Eugenio, Mariana Pimentel, MIlene Duenha & Iacã Macerata
January 13-20, 2024
Fazendinha - Casa Amarela | Parque da Serra da Caneca Fina, Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro
THE PROPOSAL
The LANDscape embodied research retreat course is proposed as an immersive journey in the constellation of games of the Modus Operandi AND through the sensitive key of the new concept tools Support & Enchantment, Alight & Flight and Restoration ((read more about MO_AND and those new tools at the end of this call), at the service of the affective, situated and experiential investigation of the fold between the intimate and the political, and of the modes of ex-conjuration of the systemic Irreparable.
The journey begins with small-scale AND board games, towards practices in which the body as a somatic-political aggregate becomes a 'board' for games of care-curation, and also includes outdoor games dedicated to researching inseparability with a more-than-human biodiversity, in direct contact with the beings of the land and the river.
This route, guided by Fernanda Eugenio, is organized as a ritual journey of self-auscultation and individual and collective micro-transmutation, and is supported by three companion practices, proposed by members of the AND Collective:
Mariana Pimentel will bring her Re-Junctioning Practices; Milene Duenha, the proposal of her Microscopic-Political Dance and Iacã Macerata, a psychologist and also a member of the AND Collective, will offer a space for listening and (re)formulating what is experienced, through the Conversation Game.
The link between the constellation of AND games and these different companion practices will be made through a set of performative-ritual gestures of Alight & Flight led by Fernanda Eugenio, creating a sustained field for the retrospective, concentrated and embodied sharing of all the research carried out during the 2023 edition of the School of Reparar.
.
The LANDscape program of the School of Reparar takes place twice a year, once in Portugal and once in Brazil, in locations far from urban centers, in a proposal of immersion and focus close to nature, interspersing work in the studio and outdoors.
In Brazil, the program takes place in Guapimirim, a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, 40 minutes from the capital, in partnership with Casa Amarela, in the Fazendinha space, in contact with the Caneca Fina river and the Atlantic Forest reserve of the Serra da Caneca Fina Natural Park.

HOW TO GET THERE / TRANSPORTATION
- For those coming by car: from Rio de Janeiro, put in the GPS the final destination Serra da Caneca Fina Natural Park. The toll is R$18,60. When you arrive at the park, at the entrance, the porters provide a map and explain how to get to Fazendinha. There is no internet signal in the park, but, if necessary, there is a café near the gate with wi-fi, from where you can contact us;
- For those coming by bus: from Rio de Janeiro, take bus 196-C - Viação Reginas - Central X Guapimirim (value informed on the site: R$11,50). The bus leaves from Central do Brasil every half hour. The trip lasts an average of 2 hours. Get off at the Caneca Fina final stop. The course production will organize schedules to pick up participants at the bus stop. On the registration form, indicate whether you will need this ride, or contact us after finalizing the registration, informing the expected arrival time, within the time range indicated in the Schedule of Activities;
- If you are coming from other cities, and need help locating public transportation, please contact us;
- Uber: for those who prefer, there are Uber drivers who make the trip from Rio to Guapimirim or internally, from the city to the Park. Here are some reliable contacts: Adauto: (21) 964669121; Berg: (21) 972951313; Tiago: (21) 981734760;
- Hitchhiking: as a sustainable alternative, after the registration closes, a board for hitchhiking will be organized in a shared document, so that interested people can arrange hitchhiking among themselves autonomously.
FOOD
Included in the course fee is a welcome breakfast on January 13th, and daily lunches and dinners throughout the course. There will be no meal service for breakfast and snacks.
Each participant is responsible for bringing the ingredients and cooking their own breakfast (each chalet has its own kitchen). Each person is also responsible for contributing a snack to make up the collective afternoon meal.
We suggest that each person comes with the food items they will need during the retreat before going up to Fazendinha, as there won't be time to go to the supermarket once the course has started. In the condominium where Fazendinha is located, there is also a kiosk that serves meals and a café with a small grocery store, but for both you need to travel there by car.
WHAT TO BRING
Light, comfortable clothes for the day and warm clothes for the night, bathing suit, yoke, sunscreen, hat, repellent, sneakers, flip-flops, medicines or special food items you may need. The hostel provides bed and bath linen and a blanket. For those who feel very cold, we recommend bringing an extra blanket or sleeping bag. If you wish, you can also bring an extra towel, as the place is very humid and the bath towel can sometimes take a while to dry.
MORE ABOUT THE NEW CONCEPT-TOOLS
The new concept-tools Alight/Support and Flight/Enchantment will be approached as gesture-antidotes to the helplessness and disenchantment that, in the form of tiredness and confusion, on the one hand, and sadness and dullness, on the other, configure the symptomatic of the capitalistic expropriation of the sensible, and produce the illusion of separation characteristic of contemporary subjectivities, reiterating the perpetuation of the Irreparable plunder. Discontinuing the Irreparable, thus, involves re-membering - remembering that we are inseparable and, also, putting back together again what has been separated, reestablishing the access to a wisdom of the (i)limit, much broader than each of us: the embodied, implicated, and timeless wisdom of the Sum-Earth aggregate that connects us to the Common Fund of Life - a way found to name the Interbeing of which we are at once part and whole.
The hypothesis that has been created by Fernanda Eugenio associates helplessness to a curse at the same time singular and collective, which produces the individual point of view and creates its verisimilitude, effecting it as symbolic and sensitive efficacy, as an unavoidable subjective reality. The efficiency of helplessness makes it impossible to feel the sufficiency of abundance that the sensitive experience of inseparability allows us to access continuously. If helplessness scares away the possibility of rest and imposes infinite mobilization and endless discomfort, the magic of re-establishing Alight involves breaking the curse that establishes each individual point of view as a separated fragment, retelling one's own story, and thus accessing the possibility of support/help. A 're-landing', already defragmented, in the Common Ground of Life. A nest-making: re-cognizing and re-membering the webs of sustenance, involvement, and refuge of Alight, (re)learning to receive.
This nesting is what will, in turn, allow us to unlock the spell of Flight - a reconciliation with the Enchantment. It is from the nest - and above all, by departing from it, taking off from identification and understanding - that we enter into Flight and experience being a flock. In the state of Enchantment, access is given to the implied order, to the (extra)ordinary fountain of the possibilities of Life, in constant re-generation and re-union. Fusion without confusion, integrity without wholeness, in the experience of the Flight we tune in to the frequency band in which we know ourselves as an amalgam, we know ourselves as accomplices of the mystery and we can sustain it without haste or desires of unraveling or pacification. It is a frequency range in which we fully appropriate the consequences of being part-whole: of being viscerally implicated, in all that there is and in all that is given, enchanted.
Enchantment is thus (re)learning to reciprocate.
To operate Support & Enchantment, Alight & Flight - to bewitch one's own curse - is a process that allows us to explore in the body, as somatic-political reality (in its physicality, but also in the broad field of its beyond, at the same time trans-and infra-individual), a specific modulation of Reparar, the gesture-synthesis of the Modus Operandi AND: restoration. Restoration is here experienced as Rest and Re-story-action: both as deep rest and surrendering and as re-history and re-cognition: a 'new knowing' of oneself, recognizing oneself as a fractal of Life, at the same time in continuity and interconnectivity with all other manifestations of Life and already (and since always), as a singular dose of All and Everything.
MORE ABOUT MO_AND
The Modus Operandi AND (MO_AND) is a methodology for the ethical-aesthetic, somatic-political and experiential investigation of relationship and reciprocity, based on the radical commitment to repair the Irreparable, created by anthropologist and artist Fernanda Eugenio.
Mobilizing a constellation of concept-tools and game-propositions, MO_AND propitiates the direct and experiential investigation of the mechanisms of living-together, that is, of the composition practiced as ethics of positioning-with, through the exercise of the Reparar: to stop again (re-parar), to make the inventory-invention of the possible each time (reparagem), and to effect repair through the durational care-curation of relationships (reparação). By practicing an embodied consciousness and modes of doing based on the circumscription of the common and the performativity of affect, which place thinking, feeling, and doing on the same plane, MO_AND paves the way for the emergence of collaborative landscapes and territories of sufficiency, based on the co(m)passionate exercise of presence and the reconnection with the sensitive experience of inseparability.
MO_AND offers concrete tools to enhance processes of collaboration, co-learning, and negotiation of coexistence. In particular, it allows the perception of behavioral patterns and relational tendencies, contributing to the development of emotional self-regulation skills, self-management of attention (selection, focusing and coordination of stimuli), and consequent decision making and respective embodiment.
In the scope of the workshops, the 'board game' interface is the one that serves as the basis for sharing, then unfolded into different more complex exercises, with different scales, in the studio or in outdoor space, depending on the group and the duration of the meeting.
In this game there are no pre-established rules, but immanent rules, which emerge from the game itself, that is, from the co-positioning and co-responsibility of those who participate. Through a work of folding and unfolding and direct handling of the materiality of events, it is possible to embody the issues of coexistence, sustainability, creativity, empathy/sympathy, availability to difference, and reciprocity.
The exercises allow participants with the most diverse interests and profiles - coming from any area, having or not previous contact with each other or with the MO_AND - to share the same plane of disquiet, experiencing in an intimate and collective way the ethical-political and affective issues involved in the co-responsive construction of the common.
PRACTICE FROM AND COLLECTIVE COLLABORATORS
Re-junctioning Practices
Mariana Pimentel | Rio de Janeiro AND Lab Cluster
Re-Junctioning Practices experiments with the poetics of agglutination, activating affections of permanence by raising in the body the question "What keeps us together?" From experiments that are inspired by creative processes related to 'gambiarras' - a Brazilian word to refer to (im)provisional and situated solutions -, com-posing collages and mosaics, Re-junctioning Practices proposes to rethink our relationship with the ideas of continuity and maintenance through gaps, fissures and cracks.
Microscopic-political Dance
Milene Duenha | Núcleo AND Curitiba
Starting from the premise that transformations in the collective dimension refer to a reciprocal logic of transformations that take place in the bodies that make it up, this practice of microscopic activation turns to cultivating the body's sensitive potentialities. By recognizing that we don't know everything that a body can do and by provoking a modulation of attention to the vibrations of microscopic existences, we seek to refine our perception of the emergences, as a power of life, that occur in the interferences between the bodies in the environment. This practice is operated by an ethics of relationships that involves a re-dimensioning of attention to the speeds and intensities of the minor and its aspects of ungovernability.
Conversation-Game
Iacã Macerata | Rio de Janeiro/Florianópolis AND Lab Cluster
The Conversation-Game is a performative and research practice that adopts the Modus
Operandi AND as a modulator of the Conversation. In it, we exercise another way of talking, in which speaking becomes a position-taking, and listening, Repairing. It is an invitation to re-experience conversation as common doing, where living together implies communicating.
